Project Synopsis
Sarah, a disillusioned marine scientist in a near-future world devastated by climate change, finds unexpected hope during a taxi ride with her kind, local driver Amir. As their contrasting views on the environment collide, she rediscovers that even in existential crises, individual actions can spark hope, joy, and a sense of purpose.
Character 1
Sarah
Age
mid 20s
Gender
Female
Description
(open ethnicity) A marine biologist working on nudibranch conservation on Berubah Island. Her love for marine science comes from her strong care for animals and the environment that she has had from a young age. Through her research, Sarah has seen firsthand how quickly ecosystems are deteriorating. As she continues her research career, she has started to view the world as a dystopian nightmare. Her research findings have proven to be dismal time after time, and she finds herself losing hope. Caring, anxious, and focused.
Character 2
Amir
Age
Late 30s to early 50s
Gender
Male
Description
(South East Asian) A taxi driver, born and raised in Kota Kinabalu, Borneo. Due to displacement induced by sea level rise, he now lives in Berubah. These two islands are all he knows. Innately curious and kind. A dreamer. He has experienced firsthand the impacts of global warming, and he has also observed how the lives of those around him are affected by it. But he chooses to stay as present and hopeful as he can. He doesn’t have another option. Optimistic, forward-thinking, and hopeful.
Character 3
Kai
Age
Late 20s to mid 30s
Gender
Male
Description
(open ethnicity) Sarah’s coworker and friend; they have been working together for a year. Kai has been involved in coral research for ten years. Kai thinks critically through problems, and is excellent at remaining calm through times of crisis. Though he and Sarah are exposed to the same research, he is more adept at staying in the present while reminding himself that he is doing the best he can, in his sphere of influence, to confront the climate crisis. Comforting, grounded, and practical.
