Project Synopsis
The story of “Bitter Melon" is heartfelt yet bittersweet. It follows a father-daughter relationship marked by unspoken love and missed connections.
A terminally-ill Chinese father Wei (威) struggles to connect with his estranged daughter Suzy (蘇濟) as they share a warm meal at the family dinner table. Wei expresses his affection through carefully prepared meals, believing that food is his way of connecting to his daughter. However, he fails to realize Suzy's effort in trying to communicate with him in another way. Suzy also fails to understand Wei's gestures, creating a growing emotional distance between the two. Will Wei and Suzy come to realize the depth of each other's love before it is too late?
This film will be guided by a fairytale-like narration of the story, letting us understand the thoughts of the characters' minds through a light-hearted depiction of two animals from opposite kingdoms: a wise Owl and an energetic Rabbit. "Bitter Melon" explores themes of love, family, missed opportunities, and the silent messages that often go unheard.
