Project Synopsis
19-year-old Riley never really felt ‘normal’ when talking about her sexuality. Growing up in a religious household, she never felt she could truly express who she was to her family, and friends in fear of losing them. She hides her relationship from her family, fighting her urge to be who she truly is. However, when her mom invites her old college friend and her kids over for dinner, it takes a chaotic turn which forces Riley to confront the reality of her future.
Character 1
Riley
Age
18-25
Gender
Female
Description
Riley is a thoughtful and intelligent young woman, caught between self-acceptance and the fear of rejection from her deeply religious family. Studying health sciences at Stanford, she appears to have it all together, but beneath the surface, she struggles with being honest about who she is. Though independent, Riley has a deep fear of being alone, often tolerating situations she shouldn't out of the worry that standing up for herself will leave her isolated. Well-liked by those around her, Riley still feels like an outsider in her own life, afraid that embracing her true self could shatter the stability she’s built. Moving away for school allowed her the freedom to be herself, as she’s been keeping her relationship with Bree a secret from her family. However, when Bree unexpectedly arrives at dinner, Riley reaches a breaking point with her mom and can no longer hide. Faced with her mother’s disapproval, she finally finds the courage to stand up for herself, risking everything in the hope of being accepted for who she truly is.
Character 2
Sarah
Age
30-60
Gender
Female
Description
Sarah is a deeply religious and traditional woman who values control and adherence to the status quo. Outgoing and social, she takes pride in the image of a perfect family and becomes uncomfortable when things deviate from her expectations. Stubborn, dramatic, and emotional, Sarah struggles to reconcile her faith with her love for Riley, allowing her religious values to cloud her judgment. When Riley comes out, Sarah reacts with denial and rejection, unable to accept a reality that challenges her beliefs. Despite her strict and controlling nature, she is not without compassion. Her love for her daughter ultimately pushes her toward reluctant growth, forcing her to confront her biases and try—however imperfectly—to understand.
Character 3
Dimitri
Age
18-28
Gender
Male
Description
Sarcastic and teasing, Dimitri often pokes fun at Riley but doesn’t seem malicious. He is confident, likely the golden child of the family. Though his humor can be biting, he doesn’t seem to hold strong opinions on his sister’s sexuality but he’s protective of her (deep down).
Character 4
Mark
Age
30-60
Gender
Male
Description
Mark is your typical silly dad, who likes to make jokes and teases his kids. He has always been supportive towards his kids, mainly only dealing with sports decisions, as he has never been in a deep conflict with his kids. While not overtly supportive of Riley’s sexuality, he isn’t as resistant as Sarah. He struggles to navigate the tension between his wife’s beliefs and his love for his daughter. He loves his kids not matter what but is disappointed thinking he did something wrong when as a parent for this to happen. He wants his kids to grow up and have a family like him, and he feels that can’t happen with Riley choices.
Character 5
Reid
Age
18-25
Gender
Male
Description
Reid is a polite and academically focused young man. He is used as a potential love interest for Riley, despite having no actual romantic interest in her. His presence is mostly for comedic and awkward moments, he tends to go along with things to avoid conflict, as Sarah tries to play matchmaker.
