Project Synopsis
Roots - a historical short film set in 1940s Vancouver, exploring themes of discrimination, resilience, and change. Seeking actors for pivotal roles in a city council meeting scene, where local residents voice their opinions—both for and against—a young Indo-Canadian woman’s right to purchase a home in a white neighbourhood.
Character 1
BUSINESS OWNER
Age
20s-40s
Gender
Male
Description
Stocky, well-dressed, and pragmatic. He masks his prejudice behind economic concerns, arguing that the presence of "certain buyers" makes people nervous and threatens local businesses. Charismatic yet unapologetic in his self-interest.
Character 2
TEENAGE BOY
Age
15-20
Gender
Male
Description
Slouched, indifferent on the surface, but his words betray curiosity. He parrots his father’s opinions, repeating ideas about "keeping the door closed." But there’s hesitation—perhaps a seed of doubt—that makes him compelling.
Character 3
RELUCTANT MAN
Age
20s-40s
Gender
Male
Description
Thin, tired-looking, shifting uncomfortably as he speaks. He doesn’t hate—he just wants to keep his head down. A man torn between conscience and self-preservation, unwilling to take a stand but aware of the injustice. His uncertainty is his defining trait.
Character 4
CONFLICTED WOMAN
Age
30s-50s
Gender
Female
Description
Wears a faded but well-kept dress, hands clasped around a lace handkerchief. A softer, hesitant voice among the opposition. She remembers a time before these restrictions existed but convinces herself that “times have changed.” Her guilt lingers just beneath the surface.
Character 5
ANGRY MAN
Age
30s-40s
Gender
Male
Description
Red-faced, sleeves rolled up, barely containing his rage. The loudest and most overtly bigoted voice in the room. Speaks with venom, seeing this as an invasion rather than a debate. His hostility is raw, ugly, and deeply ingrained.
