Project Synopsis
This will be a short, innovative theatre-based film about William Blake. This research-creation project is led by a playwright who is also a noted Blake scholar.
Character 1
William Blake
Age
Around 60
Gender
Open
Description
Considering Blake's views on the hermaphroditic nature of the psyche, all genders will be considered for the role. I have indicated an age of 60 but am open to other age ranges. Some prior exposure to and interest in Blake's poetry and paintings recommended. Above all, to attempt this role, a major consideration is whether one can convey Blake as he was described: “The tone and manner are incommunicable. There is a natural sweetness and gentility about Blake which are delightful. And when he is not referring to his Visions he talks sensibly and acutely.” And, “In the sweetness of his countenance and gentility of his manner he added an indescribable grace to his conversation.” Accent: RP (Received Pronunciation) or educated London accent preferred, but authenticity and emotional depth take priority over precision. Notes: Actor should be comfortable with heightened language and poetic dialogue. Expressive physicality is a plus.
Character 2
Diarist
Age
Around 50
Gender
Open
Description
A well-meaning but somewhat self-important lawyer, diarist, and journalist with a deep admiration for William Blake. Though he considers himself an intellectual and a man of letters, he often fails to fully grasp Blake’s radical vision. His fascination with Blake is genuine, but he approaches their conversations with a mix of reverence and polite skepticism, attempting to frame Blake’s ideas within the rational world he knows. Notes: RP (Received Pronunciation) or a refined British accent preferred. Actor should be comfortable delivering intellectual dialogue with a balance of skepticism and admiration.
Character 3
Blake's Wife
Age
Around 60
Gender
Female
Description
Often depicted as the quiet force that anchors Blake's chaotic genius. Accent: Light RP or London accent preferred, but emotional depth and authenticity take priority. Notes: Actor should be comfortable with moments of stillness, intimate dialogue, and subtle gestures.
