Accent Awareness Video
Setting: Carey (COMM instructor, pronunciation expert who runs the new Pronunciation Check service for students) and a student (Alex) are meeting in Carey’s office.
INT. OFFICE – DAY
Alex
Hi Bonita, do you have a second?
Carey
Of course, what’s on your mind?
Alex
I’ve been wondering… Is it really possible to change my accent? I feel like it’ll be really hard to change how I talk.
Carey
That’s a great question, and I’m glad you asked because a lot of people wonder the same thing. Everyone has an accent; it’s a natural part of how we speak. Your accent reflects your language background and identity, and it’s not something that needs to be erased.
Alex
But what if people can’t understand me? I want to be a nurse, so my patients need to be able to understand me.
Carey
It can be frustrating for you and your patients when communication breaks down. When we talk about pronunciation work, the focus isn’t on “fixing” your accent but on improving your intelligibility, helping others understand you more easily. Sometimes there are just one or two things, like certain speech sounds or how you emphasize key words, that are the main reasons for the miscommunication. Working on these can make a big difference.
Alex
So, it’s not about changing everything?
Carey
No, not at all. Sometimes even just slowing down your speech or pausing more could help others understand what you’re trying to say.
Alex
That makes sense. But what if it takes a long time to improve?
Carey
You know, adjusting pronunciation can take time—weeks, months, maybe even years. We’ll focus on one goal at a time to make it manageable and effective.
Alex
I see. So, it’s about gradual improvement, not a “quick fix”.
Carey
Exactly. Your accent is part of who you are. The goal is to help you communicate clearly, not change your accent. With greater awareness, a little practice, and lots of patience, you’ll see progress.
Alex
Thanks, Bonita. I guess that sounds doable.
Carey
Perfect. Let’s start with an assessment so I can identify one or two top pronunciation goals for you.
Alex
Sounds good! I’m looking forward to having clear steps to work on because right now, I’m not even sure where to start.
Carey
Great! And it’s my job to figure that out [smiles]. Let’s get started.
